We have The Kingston Trio to thank for sparking the interest in American roots music back in the 50s & 60s with their chart topping “Tom Dooley” in 1958.

The consequent “Folk Boom” gave rise to established artists like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie and paved the way for Dylan, The Byrds and even current bands like Fleet Foxes.

Without shadow of a yard stick one of the finest English voices in the last million years, Sandy Denny remains a relative unknown to many of today’s young whippersnappers.

While you won’t be hearing many of her jams in the club, we urge you to seek some of her stuff out to maybe play in room 3 (chill out) or on the night bus home?

Find her on wax in the collective guises of Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, The Strawbs, The Bunch or all on her lonesome as Sandy Denny. She sounds like the English countryside. Fact.

Microphones & Pasties

A short clip of Miriam and Ollie singing ‘The Visitor’ during their time in Wolverhampton recording over the summer. The round piece of metal which looks like a cigar was made by Magic Garden Studio’s technical wizard Keith, who also makes jam and pasties. This was the mics first test run and received approving noises from Gav (Producer), Gazz (Engineer) and Thomas Pink (Air Stewardess).

Messrs Pink, Blandford and Baines recently returned to Wolverhampton to lay down a new track which has received a roaring response during recent live outings. There are already plans afoot for a music video to go along with it. Watch this spaceship.

FB Shop Open for Business

It’s taken a little while but we’ve knocked up a Flight Brigade shop in time for Christmas. It includes a 6-track demo CD which we mixed ourselves using material recorded during our time in Wolverhampton over the summer.

We’re currently in the market for a virtuoso mix engineer to give our stuff the proper treatment but in the meantime we wanted you, our very patient fans, to have something you could listen to with your ears. It was mixed by Ollie and Seth (in Ollie and Miriam’s bedroom), mastered by Thomas Pink (in his bedroom) and the artwork was done by Ollie’s brother Jess (near his bedroom).

We’ve heard rumours that some people still listen to CD’s and like to have something they can hold and nibble on if they get hungry, so we’ve produced a physical disc for just this purpose. We’ve also rustled up a small run of T-shirts and some surprisingly handy ‘tote bags’ which can fit more shopping in than you think, depending on how much shopping you think they can fit.

In the spirit of the yule tide season there are also a few Christmas bundle offers which leverage the benefit of bulk buying, and ensure you get more FB for your buck. The shop will grow as time goes on, with plans afoot for a range of Flight Brigade hovercrafts and spaceships, but in the meantime be sure to let us know if you have ideas for any products you would like to see the pelican-carrying hot-air balloon plastered all over. November 24th – Back at Putney Halfmoon!

Joining us on the night will be the delightful Roo Panes and Ruth Bewsey

Hot Jam: I Woke Up Today

Handkerchief raising indie rock from the jovial Port O’Brien band this month. You wouldn’t be wrong to call ‘I Woke Up Today’ their signature dish- an absolute screamer that causes audiences to raise the eyebrow and pump the fist.

Laden with driving percussion, tasty licks and a howling singalong chorus, it’s a knockout from tip to toe.

Guten tag. As our nations capital enjoys a welcome bout of sun-shinyness, team FB are hard at work preparing draft tracks from their recent field trip to Wolverhampton. The recording went well and this visual instalment gives a little insight into the second two weeks up inside Magic Garden Studios.

Having spent a month out of the live arena, during November we’ll be playing a BBC Introducing Session and returning to two of our old haunts – the Maltings Centre in Alton (November 19th) and the Halfmoon in Putney (November 24th) where we’ll be playing some new material alongside some older favourites. See you there? We hope so.
